The Sydney Swans’ 2012 premiership flag will be unfurled at the club’s first home game of the season at the SCG on April 6 against the Gold Coast Suns, but what is the significance of unfurling the flag? When the VFL was established in 1897, the eight competing clubs would play for the premiership flag each year. Back then, there was no such thing as the premiership cup (it was only introduced in 1959) so the prize on offer for the winning team at the end of the season was the premiership flag.

In those days, the winning club would unfurl the flag to their supporters at their first home match the following season and would either leave the flag on display for the season or hoist it for the first home match only. It was a tremendous honour to not only claim the premiership flag but to unfurl the flag at the first home game the season.

Despite the introduction of the premiership cup, the tradition of unfurling the flag still continues today with the Swans set to unfurl the 2012 premiership flag at the club’s first home match of the season in round 2 against the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday, April 6 at the SCG.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to be in their seats by 1.00pm to witness the unfurling of the premiership flag at 1.15pm.
