Wendy Whiteley will officially open the beautifully and newly restored main lounge of the original Broadhurst Cottage set in the grounds of the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery in Sydney’s Gymea.

The Cottage has undergone a major restoration and refurbishment over the past few months in keeping with the 1940’s era of the home of Hazel and Ben Broadhurst right down to the colours and style of the original furnishings.

It is more than 70 years since the home of Hazel and Ben Broadhurst has been brought back to its original stage in colour and in design. We are delighted to have Wendy Whiteley launch our Cottage, which has been restored with the help of Friends of Hazelhurst.  There’s also much in common with Wendy Whiteley and Ben Broadhurst.  Both used a garden to save land for community use.  Ben was an avid gardener and turned the property into a “farm” with animals, orchards and 6 rhododendrons to mark 6 years of the war said Director of Hazelhurst Gallery, Belinda Hanrahan.

The restoration to the Cottage’s former glory as a rare historic post-war home is a tribute to Ben and Hazel Broadhurst who made sure this house and garden were kept as a place to be enjoyed by the community added Belinda Hanrahan.

The Cottage will be used for Hazelhurst Gallery’s artist-in-residence, a member’s room for the Friends of Hazelhurst and a library.

People will also have the opportunity to hear Wendy Whiteley talk about her new book along with author of Secret Garden, Janet Hawley.
