Sutherland Shire Mayor, Kent Johns said Sutherland Shire Council is undergoing the tender process this month to commence works on Stage 2 of the $6.8 million upgrade of Captain Cook Drive at Woolooware.

Stage 1 of the project has been completed with construction of a new raised roadway on the northern side of the existing carriageway of Captain Cook Drive between Woolooware Road and Elouera Road. The new roadway will form the east bound lanes of the final four lane roadway with space provided for a bicycle/breakdown lane in each direction. The new roadway has been constructed at a higher level, in order to reduce the incidence of flooding.

Works are soon to commence on Stage 2 of the project which will connect the recently constructed carriageway to the existing roundabout at the intersection of Woolooware Road and Captain Cook Drive. Two-way traffic will then be diverted onto the roadway constructed in Stage 1 enabling works to commence on raising the two remaining lanes to the new level. Once completed and connected to the roundabout, the existing off-road share path on the southern side of Captain Cook Drive will be improved with a new concrete surface.

Weather permitting, Stage 2 will be completed in November and will see the new four lane road open to traffic. As settlement of the new roadway (east bound), constructed over estuarine sediments in Stage 1 is expected to occur, a temporary road pavement has been constructed. Stage 3 of the project will involve constructing a final road pavement treatment in 2015.

The Mayor said the widened road will improve access for the residents of Kurnell, the new Greenhills residential development, and around the Bate Bay beaches, as well as the new playing fields, to be provided by Australand/Breen as part of its development.

“During construction 24,000 tonnes of fill generated from other council roadworks throughout the Shire will be deposited at the site to help raise the road. By redirecting this material from landfill, council will save

$1 million in disposal costs,” the Mayor said.
