Uncertainty at commuter car park plan

THE state government is yet to secure a site for its proposed $37 million commuter car park at Sutherland railway station.

Transport for NSW officials have had talks with Sutherland United Services Club about purchasing its car park, but a firm offer has yet to be made.

Premier Barry O’Farrell and Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian announced the plan for a free car park with 300 spaces at the end of May.

Ms Berejiklian said a preferred site had been identified within short walking distance of the station, and Transport for NSW would immediately begin negotiations with the private owner to secure it.

Government sources said the site was the rear section of the club property, bounded by Oxford and Robertson streets, which is now used as a members’ car park and has a squash court and gym.

The club’s chief executive officer Grahame Bowen said talks had taken place, but nothing had been resolved.

It would be the largest of nine new, no-charge commuter car parks to be created across the CityRail network at a cost of $170 million.
