BUSHCARE VOLUNTEERS TO REVIVE HEATHCOTE SESQUICENTENARY PARK

Sutherland Shire Council’s Bushcare unit is looking for more volunteers to help get Heathcote Sesquicentenary Park in East Heathcote back to its former glory.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Kent John said he was delighted that so far, 18 local residents had enthusiastically offered to help out with the rehabilitation of Heathcote Sesquicentenary Park during 2013 and he thanked them for their community spirit.

Heathcote Sesquicentenary Park was established in 1992 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the suburb of Heathcote. It covers an area of 2.4 hectares and features a playground, grassed play areas and approximately 1.5 hectares of bushland. Twenty years on, the bushland now needs rehabilitation due to weed infestation, soil erosion and browsing by feral deer.

“Council will be erecting fencing to keep feral deer out of the park as well as planting native trees and plants, however due to the size of the park, more volunteers are needed to work with our Bushcare officers to rehabilitate the park,” the Mayor said.

“We are looking for volunteers that are enthusiastic, energetic and have the physical ability to work outdoors. It is also important to have an interest in the natural environment as well,” said the Mayor.

Sequicentenary Park volunteers meet at the Park every first Thursday of the month or every first Saturday of the month, depending on which day suits the volunteer. People do not need to be available for all sessions, Bushcare is grateful for any time people can give.

With the opportunity to meet other Bushcare volunteers with similar interests, volunteers undertake weeding, mulching, planting, rubbish removal, and seed collection just to name a few activities. Council’s Bushcare officers are on site with volunteers to offer assistance and expertise.

Sutherland Shire has over 700 active Bushcare volunteers working in more than 100 established Bushcare groups throughout the Shire.
